Over the past decade, local filmmaker and producer Nancy Bourne Haley has been collaborating with the Foss Waterway Seaport to create content and enhance the exhibits illuminating the Thea Foss and Foss Tug and Launch Company stories.  With a documentary film in 2006 and a community play in 2017, visitors to the Seaport have learned much about the Foss’ contribution to Tacoma’s maritime history.

Finding Thea

Finding Thea, the film, is the story of Thea Foss, a 19th century Norwegian immigrant to the Pacific Northwest, who became the inspiration for the fictional heroine Tugboat Annie and creator of one of the Pacific’s largest tugboat companies. A classic American immigrant success story!

The Other Country

The Other Country is a community-based, site-specific event, placing the memorable Thea Foss story squarely in its original and authentic setting. The production took place both inside and outside the dynamic and historic Foss Waterway Seaport (705 Dock Street, Tacoma), with five sold-out shows on August 10-13, 2017.  The Other Country celebrates our diverse backgrounds, the spirit of a strong female entrepreneur, and the enduring beauty and power of Puget Sound. Learn More
