CURRENTLY ON EXHIBIT
The James Robert Hanssen has returned to Tacoma and is on display at the Museum! In 2006, University of Puget Sound graduates Jordan Hanssen, Brad Vickers, Dylan LeValley and Greg Spooner were the first Americans to row nonstop unassisted from New York to England. Their vessel shows the confined quarters where the foursome experienced courage, loyalty, fear, despair, human triumph and friendship to the extreme as they rowed 3,200 miles, 24 hours a day, with two rowers on shift and two off at all times.

See our wonderful collection of classic recreational boats in an exhibit called "Boats for all Occasions", which includes a 1914 speedboat cruiser, an Olympic class sailboat, hydroplanes — including the famous Miss Bardahl, original Andrew Foss rowboats, Willits canoes and a steamboat. Also included are a number of antique outboard motors from the turn of the last century.
Don't miss our newest exhibit "Shipbuilding: The Hall Brothers" which includes many examples of shipbuilding tools. This exhibit will be on display through the end of August.
Our building is the last of the remaining intact section of a continuous heavy timber frame warehouse that defined Tacoma’s waterfront for almost a century. The Balfour Dock Building Exhibit is a key exhibit in our permanent collection. The 3–section exhibit showcases the history of our building complete with sound effects including wharf and water sounds. To learn more about our building's history, visitors can watch three short videos covering the Northern Pacific construction of the building, the journey of wheat from Central and Eastern Washington and the architecture of the building.
The Seaport's Boat Shop craftsmen are currently handcrafting a copy of an original Andrew Foss skiff. Watch our boatbuilders at work on Thursday and Saturday afternoons.
